The water left over in the drilling pit is permitted to be treated and then sprayed onto the land. But that spraying does not always work as the death of these plants shows.
(Note, however, that Marcellus Shale frac water that returns to the surface is required to be hauled off and disposed of somehow, sometimes after reuse. This pit would contain much smaller amounts conventional drilling frac water flow-back, plus the cuttings and drilling fluids.)
