For ease of reference, we have given names to the four owners of the minerals included in our pool. They are named here for the compass quadrants of their ownership.
(Note that the mineral owners in West Virginia are probably not also the surface owners. Most surface owners do not get to own their minerals. And in most cases the ownership of the surface is even more subdivided than ownership of the minerals. Mr. Northwest could have been talked into selling his mineral rights to an oil or gas company. After the ownership of the minerals and the surface were separated, Mr. Northeast could have subdivided the surface into smaller tracts to sell to new neighbors, suburbanites, or vacation home owners. Ms Southeast might have been a sister of Ms. Southwest and the surface home place was divided up among siblings, again after the ownership of the minerals and the surface were separated.)
