After the driller has gone as deep as he has planned for this first drilling, the drill bit is pulled out.  What remains at this point there is a bare hole into the ground that goes through the good and bad ground water strata.

There is often a loose pipe called a “conductor” pipe in the ground during all of this just to prevent the looser dirt near the top of the hole from falling in on the drilling pipe and bit.  But this is not a true casing.
